Global feelings

As exchange students, we think the capstone project is well incorporate in our Erasmus program. Besides scientific courses (we are studying in chemical engineering section), the capstone courses complete our schedule and make it a little bit more diversify. The integration part was essential to make contact with the other members and work in group allow us to focus on what we have to do in the separated tasks in order to respond to Nestlé’s expectations. Weekly work meetings are planned in order meet up each other, to collect all the informations and to determine the project’s advance. Everyone’s role are usually clear because the communication is constant and everyone can roughly do what he want. That collaboration which plays on everyone’s assets let us to make us useful and make us happy.

Blog Update Weeks 16 - 17

Capstone showroom 17.4

The long-awaited capstone showroom happened and unfortunately we didn't win any of the categories but they were more favoriable to projects that had an actual product to show and sell. Although we didn't win we had a interesting and fun times showing what we had done for our project. We were happily suprised about the amount of interest people at the showroom gave our project and we would like to thank everyone that came to our stand and asked about our project.

Week 17

Now that this capstone project is coming to a close we still have one major event left and that is Nestlé meeting that will happen tuesday 24.4. During the meeting we will give more detailed presentation about our research and findings to our stakeholders.

Progress of the project

The project has consisted of several different entities, such as renewable energy, waste management, prototype design and marketing. Our group was divided into small groups by topics. The groups have worked independently on their own topics, regardless of the timetable of other groups. Others have worked at school and others at the Nestlé factory.

The waste management group worked mainly at the factory. At the factory, the work consisted of a large amount of information reseach and access to files, which meant that working at the factory was necessary. Numerous calculations and cost estimates were made on the basis of information research and new solutions were devised.

We kept meetings with the whole project team at regular intermissions to keep everyone up to date on the progress of the whole project. In the near future, all the groups have worked at school for the final presentations. In addition, we've put the whole project together.

What have we done weeks 7-9

Solar group:

Research about government aid for renewable energy and Finland´s weather conditions affect solar panel output. Information about different types of material and types that are used in solar panels.  Contacted other companies about their prices for installing the solar panels on the top of the building afterwards researched about what to do with the excess electricity that we may produce. Calculations about the leasing and buying aspects of the solar panels. Also which is the most cost-effective way to get the solar panels and if bought what is the time it takes to break even and start producing income

Waste group and prototype:

Data collection from the factory´s database about waste management. Mapping waste process in factory and collecting history data of bio waste and landfill waste. Calculations of waste cost and calculations for waste removal cost benefits. Contacting with cooperation partners concerning bio and landfill waste. Brainstorming prototype alternatives and drawing prototype with specific program.

Nestlé project group:

Together we have meetings and discussions about the work we have previously done. We keep good contact with each other and share our work. Given tasks we do together. Pitch, poster and marketing  blueprint is made together and afterwards given to some individuals to continue the task.

Week 3 Project status

Solar:

Mikko: Found out what government aid Nestlé can get and how does Finland´s weather conditions    affect solar panel output.

Tommi: Checking information about different types of material and types that are used in solar panels. I also contacted other companies about their prices for installing the solar panels on the top of the building then I researched about what to do with the excess electricity that we may produce.

Aki: Making calculations about the leasing and buying aspects of the solar panels. Also which is the most cost-effective way to get the solar panels and if bought what is the time it takes to break even and start producing income.

Landfill waste + prototype:

Erik/Joni/Kristian:
  • Brainstormed prototype alternatives
  • reviewed Nestle's history of biowaste and landfill waste
  • waste removal's various costs
  • discussed Bioluup's machine and its potential benefit
  • discussed Ekopartnerit's means of waste disposal and relationship with Nestle

Water consumption:

Gemb/Tomi:
  • Data collection from the factory´s water consumption
  • Working with biowaste group

Stakeholder meeting at Nestlé factory 18.1.2018

We held a stakeholder meeting at Nestlé factory to find out where we should focus our efforts in the project. We had prepared questions and propositions for the stakeholders which we ran through and then we discussed which are good ideas and not so good ideas or ideas which we probably don’t have time for.

We also discussed marketing and we got a lot of useful information like where Nestlé would like us to advertise our results and who are we marketing to.
By the end of the meeting we confirmed who are the contact persons for our different groups and what we should do if we want to work on the project in the factory.

Sprint plan for the next two weeks (4 and 5)

Current situation:
- divided in to three different groups

1. Renewable energy (solar):
- Solar energy cost calculations (leasing, solar produced price/kWh)
- Researching about possible government aid?

2. Water consumption:
- Mapping the water consumption (weekly cleaning, production
- Waterless urinals (costs, implementation)
- Current washing methods/habits

3. Landfill waste:
- Where it comes from, mapping
- Contacting to a co-operative company
